it matter on the the type of scarf you are knitting and if your useing more than one color and how long a real long scarf abou 1 1/2 yard if your makeing what i will say a normal size LOL they 1 yard should be fine i knitted my moms friend a really long scarf last christmas she couldn't find them in the store and it only took 1 1/2 yard of yarn i used one color it was the first time I made a scarf that long and i loved it any way.
