Question:

HDMI: good or bad? Which cables to get? Why?

I just purchased a new TV: Samsung LN46B550, and am currently researching Blu-Ray players and connections. I was set on using HDMI, but have be hearing mixed reviews and am confused.1: Are there different quality HDMI cables. Which ones do I need. I am guessing I need 2, one from my set top box to tv, and one from Blu-Ray player to TV. 2: What is this about HDMI cables having control over downstream content? What does that even mean? Thanks!

Answer:

HDMI, is much better than other cables, but note, that even if you buy the cheaper hdmi cables, that'll do, dont bother with the expensive ones as it does not make a diffeernce
Get yourself a Panasonic BD-60 for around $150. It is the best entry level blu ray disc player in the market today. HDMI cable is the only cable capable of the 1080P and the 7.1 surround sound. It really does not make a difference with HDMI cable you get. The more expensive one are made of better material than the cheap one of course. Go online to Home Theater Magazine and read the reviews on blu ray disc player and what ever else you might be interested in. Hope this will help you out.
HDMI cables definitely improve the quality of sound and video. The rule of thumb is if you are going to need cables of 6 feet or less, go with inexpensive ones. The longer the distance, the more you should move up the quality (and price) scale. As for downstream content, normal patch cords go from the source to the component and only in that direction. HDMI cables allow for signal to travel to and from the component. If you are going blu-ray to an HD TV, it's worth the dollars.
