Answer:

Well before you run into trouble or go out and get ripped off, do 1 very simple thing, That is take the gas cap off and put it on tightly. There are times when air gets into the gas and somehow the sytem check engine light appears. I hope that is the only problem. If that is not it be sure you have enough oil, than if that is Ok you may want to bring it to a mechanic
The check engine lamp in a car built after 1996 (when OBD2 regulations were adopted), can be caused by over a hundred things. Loose gas caps are a popular cause of problems, but not the only one, by any means. Exhaust gas sensors, temperature sensors, fuel system vapor leaks (other than the gas cap), EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valves, are just a few. Even with those, they can fail in several ways each, and there will be a code for each one. You should take your car into an auto parts store, where they will read the code and tell you the problem.
Adding onto what Terrance said. Take off the gas cap and put it back on tight after a minute or so. THEN, disconnect the negative side of the battery for a minute, then reconnect it. 98% of the time, the light will go out and stay out. Did this on my 2001 Civic and also on my 1997 Accord over the last year and the lights never came back on. O yea, and it only came on due to the fact my 18 year old daughter put gas in the car. Need I say more?
