It's not even a fact. It's just a myth or stereotype used in cartoons. Some dogs will pee on hydrants, but they'll also pee on grass, trees, etc. to send a message or mark.
I have has dogs all my life and I don't think I ever saw one of them pee on a fire hydrant. Sign posts, mailbox posts, trees, etc. but no fire hydrants.
I think it really varies person to person. I mean for anyone though, its how well that person your with knows YOU and what you like. The fact that they listen when your into something and know what gets you happy or excited and try to do the little things to make it all worth the while in small instances makes a huge impact I think. For me, if any guy knew me well enough. He'd put a playlist of my favorite songs, roll out the sofa bed, put out the controllers for a ps3 (and if he's really that good probably a nin 64 or lower) make some dinner and light some candles. That would show how much he knows me and my likes. To me that is romance.. not the cliche things you see all the time.
