Question:

Horror movie or TV show episode with beetle/spider lightning rods?

So I remember seeing a movie or tv episode when I was a kid (late 80's or early 90's), in which a boy comes across an iron lightning rod that looks like it has beetles or spiders on it, and affixes it to his roof. That's all I can remember about it, and finding it again has become my white whale. I've tried 1980's Twilight Zone episodes, Night Gallery, Friday the 13th The Series, Freddy's Nightmares, and all manner of horror movies, but to no avail. Any information would be appreciated!

Answer:

could the battery be low?
I assume that all of these units are hard-wired and interconnected? If this is the case, if any one is tripped, then they all sound. A few things in no particular order: a) Low battery b) Temporary Power Failure c) Dirt in one of the units d) Insects or mites or similar in one of the units. Clean them out (Gently) with a vacuum cleaner, replace the batteries once per year whether they need it or not, and check the expiration dates on them if they are ionizing types.
smoke detectors work by ionising radiation. It is only a small dose of radiation, so if another source of radiation was leaking its way into your house it could be disrupting the detectors. are the detectors hard wired? if so then it is typical that when one goes off, all will. wiring faults could be the problem, so no matter what the cause, it is probably time to buy new ones and replace them

This sounds like you have a *hard wired* smoke detector system, where all the detectors *communicate* with each other. If one senses smoke (or is fooled into thinking there is smoke) they ALL go off. They are both simple in what they do, yet can be quite complicated in how they do it, and can be fooled in any number of ways into *seeing* something other than smoke AS smoke. Chances are, there is nothing wrong with them and that one of them either saw a very small amount of smoke or was fooled by something other than smoke. I've seen insects set them off, and also smoke so minor you almost couldn't see it yourself. There is a lot more information about the type I believe you have in the first link, and even more information about all types in the second one. If you are a curious type, have a look. Al
