What you are looking for is known as a (Heli-Coil insert). They are a coil of diamond shaped wire inserted into a special over size threaded hole. They are usually colored with a red coating. In the middle of the length of the coil are flat spots that grab on the screw to lock it against vibration loosening. You need special taps, and an inserter to use these. The inside thread is a standard screw size. You can get them for almost any screw size. Google (Heli-Coil) and you should be able to get more information and a picture of what you are asking about. They also come in a non-locking version.
We have a 90 525iand the same problem in the wintertime. Our mechanic said the cost to go through the doors' locking system would cost more than the effort is worth. Ugh! Seems like more of a chronic problem than we may have thought. $224 sounds like a reasonable deal to lock the car to me. Good luck!
