I have a large black rug. The hairs in it are impossible to get out! I've tried vacuuming AND brooming. The hairs won't budge. Does a professional need to clean it or can I clean it myslef?Thanks.
If you have the funds, buy a steam cleaner - good ones can be found for less than $200. Get one of the ones with the brushes that swirl around to pull out the hair. I got mine at Target for $168 and it doesn wonders on my carpet, even with two dogs and two kids!
I bought an area rug at a yard sale. The people had pets. So I took the pressure washer, layed it face down first and pressured the back with carpet cleaning solution in it. Then rolled it over and did the top. I pushed the water out of it with the back side of a wide push broom. Left it out to dry in the sun and it come out like new. Mine was 5ft by 7 ft. You didn't mention the size of yours. If it is just hairy and not really dirty. Use a roll of wide tape and roll it around your hand (many times) and pick up the hair. I am guessing that you have pets, the are definetly hard on black.
Take the rug to a laundromat and use the oversize commercial washer, cold water and just a little detergent; too much soap and the rug will not spin dry well. Use the oversize commercial dryer too and use low heat. A lot of the hair should be gone now. If not, use your vacuum again to see if that makes any difference. Now if you're still dissatisfied with the result, weigh the cost of a professional rug cleaner against the cost of a new area rug. Life is too short to stress over an area rug princess!
If it fits in your kitchen sink or the bath tub, ,Then put it in a little at a time, Start by wetting the first part of it, and using a scrubbing brush, and brush it brush it up and across, clean the brush of all the hair. and proceed to put the next part of it in the sink, and continue, this procedure . Once you have done the whole rug,Now use dawn or any detergent to clean it, Roll it up and stand it up to let the water drain from it. Then hang it out or put it in the dryer. When dry take a piece of large tape and go over the rug to remove any hair that is left.
