Question:

How can I tell if the exhaust system on my car needs repair/replacing?

Monday on my way to work (at 4:30 AM so I am beloved in the neighborhood), it was apparent to me that I needed a new muffler. I finally had a chance to look yesterday and, yep, there‘s a nice spot where it has rusted through. Now, if you want your sump pump replaced or a legal brief written, I‘m your man, but I know next to nothing about cars. When I take my car in to have the muffler replaced, if I am told that the exhaust system also needs work, how can I know if it truly does?

Answer:

I don't see anything wrong with getting a second opnion. Go to another shop and see what they say.
If the exhaust system is original, it may well be a welded, single unit - and it really doesn't pay to cut and splice a generic muffler onto it. You'll only be returning in 6 months or so to start piece mealing the rest of the system. Odds are, if the muffler is rusted through, the pipes aren't far behind.
sound like shop is trying to sell you more stuff than you needs. if shop is telling you the true story .tell them to put your car on the lift and show you where else exhaust is leaking.
