How did you test them? Did you test them with smoke like from a candle or just press the test button? They do get dusty inside and that can effect how they work. If you are not confident that they are working properly you should take action. Either replace them or your other idea to get the FD to check them or give you advise on how to test them. It is recommended that houses have both kinds of detectors, photo electric and ionization. You need the smoke detectors and you need to be confident that they will give you the warning you need. Anything less is not good. Search testing smoke detectors on the internet. There are sites that show the proper method of testing. Don't depend on one that you don't trust.
