Question:

How did we know what to make the space suits/ships out of?

Seeing as a color television was invented shortly before we made attempts to go into outer space, how could we have possibly have known what to make astronaut's suits and spacecraft out of to prevent them from burning up (how could we have known the moon was so hot/cold?), and surviving gravity differences, etc?

Answer:

Since this project has a slight potential for injury, make sure you have an adult supervising this project. Obtain safety goggles and always wear them throughout the experiment. This project is also perfect for a 7th grader. For the fuel use one set of the following: 1. Alka-selzer and water. 2. Mentos and cola. The fastest fuel should be Mentos and Cola so I would suggest using that. Take off the lid of the canister. Get an empty canister of film and add some decorative paper fins and a paper front cone to the end of the canister that isn't the cap. Fill the canister to within a half an inch below the lid. Tape the Mentos to the part of the lid that goes inside the canister. Get close to the ground (make sure you are on a level even surface). With the open end of the canister facing up, put the lid tightly on the canister. This is the part you need to be careful on. Invert the canister and quickly set it on the ground - Make sure you are not in the vertical path of the rocket. Good Luck!
