Question:

How did WW2 Tank suspension systems vary from country to country and from the start to the end of WW2.?

What was the most robust, effective, cost efficient, comfortable suspension system of all WW2 Tanks in your honest opinion. Cheers John. I like Torsion Bar and Panzer 2 Tank Leaf Spring.

Answer:

It is largely subjective, and I can't really say as I have a very limited experience in riding in World War II vehicles. But I believe the Panther was the best and most efficient along with the Tiger. However, none of those were cheap. Following that, the American suspension system was the most cost efficient to manufacture, produce and repair. German systems were very adaptive through the war years, particularly after 1943 when they finally went into a war-footing. many of the innovations used in the Panther were copied by western armies following the war. The Soviets went with the Christie system afterwords. There are advantages and disadvantages, of course. The German problems were largely due to their overcomplicated logistics system and limited manufacturing capabilities more than their systems.
Put simply, by the end of the war everyone pretty much everyone agreed independent suspension was the way to go and more specifically torsion bar suspensions with fairly large road wheels. With few exceptions it has been that way ever since.
