Don't know anything about the battery or the fitness of the unit, but YOU CANNOT SMELL CARBON MONOXIDE !! open some doors and window to be safe, until you solve your detector problem or verify nothing is burning in your house (gas furnaces, hot water tanks, gas stoves, a faulty burning wood fireplace, and certainly YOU ARE NOT using some kind of charcoal barbecue in your house, or even a kerosene lantern or other devise.)
Lighting could cause a fire depending on what it struck but I think that it is very unlikely that this would happen. My best advice for you is to not worry about it so much. Storms can be scary but I think your parents freaked you out a little too much.
I think you meant,, Should every room have smoke detectors? They usually recommend making sure ever room that a child sleeps in should have one, because children will usually sleep through a smoke detector that's going off outside of their room.If you did mean should every house have one..Then the answer is yes.
