Question:

How do I disassemble a digital quartz watch?

In my previous question, I asked if table salt is acidic, because my niece has a science fare. Her experiment is growing a crystal and showing how it can generate energy. She's using an old quartz watch as an example of how it can keep timing circuits and generate some electricity. So, she asked me to single-handedly disassemble a watch and take out the quartz inside. I can't find any way to open it up, any ideas?

Answer:

It is generally found in smoky quartz. All the gold ore in quartz that I have seen was white in color. Gold is rare even in quartz. Unless you are talking about minute amounts it is very unlikely to find gold in any quartz unless you happen to be in some place where gold is common. You rarely see it in the quartz unless you are looking at ore from certain mines.
