I would just leave this one alone. As long as nothing was ruined, what good will saying something do? It will only make your friend feel awkward and you feel bad for saying anything. Now you knowspring for a hotel next time! :)
They're copying off the punk thing. Punks would put safety pins on everything, I do it myself, and have friends who did it WAY before the scene thing cameon the scene. Too bad the scene kids make it suck.

I am going off your statement that you are not very familiar with electricity or the terminology. Connecting or disconnecting your ground should have NO impact on the lights going on or off. Electricity is not running through your ground wire. With that said, assuming it's wired correctly to begin with. Replacing the detector is as easy as disconnecting the old and connecting the new white to white, black to black and ground to grounds wires. **Going off what you have said I don't believe it's wired correctly. Lights should not be shutting off. You really should have an electrician look at it. It's easy to clean up, but you need to know more about electricity to do it yourself.****
