Smoke detectors have a lifespan of 10 years. It should have a date on it. My new one has a timer to beep when it's life is up. Maybe yours is telling you it's old Also you can buy a 10 year battery and just not worry about a new detector for that long
I'd highly recommend wearing rubber gloves, they are there for your safety. Dishwashing chemicals are strongly alkaline which will damage your skin, and you need to protect your hands from the hot water too. I'm quite experienced with the use of rubber gloves and dishwashing, as its what I do for work, so if you want more info, let me know.
