I want to replace my old, skeleton key bedroom door lock with a lock that it built into the knob. The only problem is the latch part of the new lock is too small to fit in the space where the existing latch is. Smoke and soot coming out of the registers indicates a cracked heat exchanger on the unit. This is a health hazard. I'm sorry to say that is not something you can repair on your own. I believe that you're probably going to need a new furnace. If there is no money for that then at least buy a good carbon monoxide detector. If it goes into alarm every time the furnace kicks in - you'll know why.
