Answer:

You answered your own question put onion in foil with alot of butter and but it right on the grill sure to bring bad great memories
I like to put grilled onions on hamburgers and hot dogsI slice an onion (red, yellow or white, whichever is your preference) into thin rings or strips, and separate themThen I take a large rectangular piece of heavy foil (or a double layer of regular foil) and arrange the onions on one half of itTop it with a few pats of butter, some pepper and some garlic powderFold it over and make about three folds on all four sides, to seal itPlace it on a hot grill four about five to seven minutes on each sideBe careful when you open it, the steam can burn youBut it's yummy in the tummy:-) Alternately, you can cut them into thicker strips or rings and lay them directly on the grill, basting them with the butter/garlic/pepperIt'll take less time, so take them off when they are browned.
GRILLED ONIONS Peel onions, core the center about 1 inch downFill cavity with butterSalt and pepper to tasteWrap each onion in foil, careful not to spill butterPlace on grill and cook approximately 30 minutesSize of onion will determine if longer or shorter time is needed on the grill.
Sounds like you remember the recipe already Given that years ago your father didn't have the option of the sweet onions that are in the market now, I think you can skip the butter if you wantIn a deep bowl, combine a small amount of olive oil, salt, pepper and any other of your favorite herbs or seasoningTake an entire onion, one per person if they are true onion lovers, remove the outer skinNext use a very sharp knife to make multiple deep slices into the onion without cutting through the core so that the veggie doesn't fall apart yetPlace in the olive oil dressing and spoon the mixture in to the openings of the onionWrap well in one to two layers of aluminum foil and voila! After cooking, the onion will fall apart, making it easier to serve and eatThis also works well with potatoesEnjoy.
I would spray paint it in the shape I want and then trim that part outor you could also wrap aluminum foil around it and spray paint that and then cut out the shape yu wantMaybe also use clear plastic wrap so you could see what you are doing
