Question:

How do I update an old sectional sofa?

One day my brand new husband and I found a sectional sofa at a garage sale and it fit in our living room perfect! We have a small house and it has 3 recliners and a fold down table built in to it. Now that we have had it for a few months we are starting to notice the upholstery rip at the seams and in some places even in the middle of the cushion. Nothing would give me greater pleasure than to throw it in the garbage and go buy a new one but as a newlywed that is not an option. And because it is so large having it reupholstered would probably cost the same. I am looking for a way to reupholster it or slip cover it or something that will make it look nice again, but something I can do myself. I can't keep sewing up holes in this sofa.

Answer:

You can buy yardage of a material that you like at a fabric store. They also sell a glue just for gluing material to material.
You can find some fun funky fabrics, sometimes on sale, and since it's a used sofa, this is the one to practice on! Online you can find some decent instructional videos that may help you decide if you want to glue, tack, or staple. I've got an old funky sofa that needs a redo, and slipcovers can be a lifesaver, if you can get one that fits. I've seen some things online about making slipcovers which sounds like what I may wind up doing. Just start googling and you should come up with some ideas. If you sew you may be able to come up with great ideas by just looking at how some are made. Good luck on the project!
