Are the chargers left under the plate while one is eating or are they removed?

Charger plates should be left under a dinner plate while eating. I love them - they are so elegant on a tablescape and actually can help keep table linens from being dirtied. Crate and Barrel has some gorgeous ones right now.
What do you do after your charge up the plates? Electrocute your guests?
The chargers are left under the plate. Then when the plate is cleared, the next plate can be placed on the charger. For example: First the salad plate, then the entree plate, then the dessert plate. It provides an elegant look at the dinner table.
