Very cold on Mars. No oxygen to breath. A warm day is 55 degrees. At night it's 50 below zero. You could not live out in the open. Any habitats would have to be underground, in caves if they can be found, or shielded in some way against cosmic rays. There is no natural magnetic shield on Mars as Earth has that protects us from cosmic rays. NASA has looked into the use of balloons or untralite aircraft to explore Mars but many questions about the atmosphere of the planet have to answered. It's not know exactly how thick the atmosphere at different altitudes. This information would be needed before any air vehicles for use on Mars could be designed. Living on Mars depends on finding water there. That would make all the difference. Water can be broken down into oxygen for breathing and Hydrogen for rocket fuel.If you have to bring all the water and oxygen with you for a trip to Mars you'd have to bring enough for each astonaut for at least three years. The ship would have to be huge. . .Some ideas for going to Mars uses total systems redundancy. An unmanned factory module and a return to Earth vehicle would be sent to Mars. Only when it was verified that this eguipment was in place and funtioning (making oxygen and hydrogen from water),would another almost identical manned ship be sent, also capable of Earth return. This increases safety and over many trips unsused return ships could be used as living space. .
