The expression is: REDUCE, REUSE, then recycleFirst of all reduce what you buy - get the full life out of the thing so you can reduce the number of times you BUY new ones They are completely washable in a normal standard home washing machine, and lo heat dryer, and this refluffs them up and cleans any dust mites or other body fluids or cooties and such Once the pillow has no life left in it as a pillow, the outer covering is too stained or gross, you can possibly reuse the fiber-fill, either by recovering it with new fabric, or use the inner stuffing for other projects or give it to a quilter or crafty person you may know who needs some fiber-fillIf the pillow isn't up to your human standards anymore but you don't want to take it apart for crafting, after a fresh laundering take it to your favorite veterinary clinic, or vet ER - the emergency after-hours pet vets need clean soft items constantly, blankets too Along with all your old bedding that is ripped or stained, and ratty bath towels and dish towels that are too torn or stained or old for Goodwill, veterinary emergency places gladly accept all clean used linens for use of the animals (Goodwill just has to re-donate linens, towels, and pillows that are in bad shape that they can't sell in their stores to people anyway to pet charities, and it adds to their sorting process) This saves everyone money on vet bills in the long run because they can keep costs down somewhat if they don't have to buy this stuff new from a storeThey need new supplies of used stuff all the timeI don't know what happens to them after that or if it keeps them ultimately out of the landfills, but I feel it is the right next step.
