Go to somewhere better that WalMart and don't buy a fire extinguisher (which probably won't be suitable for oil fires) but buy a fire blanket.
If for some reason you ever have another oil fire you should pour salt sugar, flour or any other dry ingredient onto it. Of course if you have the proper type fire extinguisher you should use that. Be safe.
Just put the lid on, it will extingush the fire, and you are done. And yes, turn off the burner. No need to panic. And the advice about not walking away to begin with is excellent advice.
Clothing store worker. All I do all day is stand around, ring up people, get to look at clothes, shoes, and hand bags..and tell people what looks good and what doesn't.
