Question:

How does pressing on a small cut stop it from bleeding?

My cat scratched my hand and as I was sitting there pressing on it, I got to thinking on how pressing on the cut for a little bit stops it from bleeding?

Answer:

Blood is composed up of differant things. Red blood cells carry oxygen throught your body, white blood cells fight infection, and platelets clot your blood. By putting pressure on the cut, you are helping the platelets clot your blood.
it stops the blood from exiting the wound allowing it time to form a clot
Applying pressure will stop the blood flow.By putting pressure on a wound, you slow the bleeding and that enables the blood to clot faster. A blood clot is the only way a person will stop bleeding completely.
by pressing on a cut, you effectively slow down the speed that blood is seeping out of your wounds. this allows coagulation of the blood to take place where... i guess an easy way to think if is when the red blood cells link together (like holding hands), hence stopping the blood flow. it's kinda like making jelly, it's liquid to begin with, but it you leave it alone (stop stirring etc), it will slowly become solid
