I'm writing a murder mystery (for real) and wondering if a killer stuffed the victim into a body bag then threw in lime to destroy the body, how long would it take. The body is hidden under her bed, in the space under the box-spring, inside the frame support. Yes this is for a real novel and serious inquiries only please.
It cuts down on bacteria if used under bedding, and can absorb some moisture. I guess it could help a little with fly control by keeping smells down, but it doesn't break down manure. If you get straight lime, it's safe for horses. Just make sure there aren't any chemicals floating around in it, usually on the bag they'll say if it's safe to use for livestock.

Lime is used on wet spots in stalls. It sanitizes them and cuts the smell. You lay it, then dirt, then cover with shavings
