Question:

How much am I looking at to replace suspension system in 2002 Hyundai Elantra GT Hatchback?

We had the tires rotated and oil changed last week. Car only has 60000 miles. Right after the oil change, car started bouncing terribly, especially at lower speeds. It is like a rock going over speed bumps and also noticed less control of steering. Took it to my mechanic and he said entire suspension system (all four struts) have to be replaced. Told me that struts were locked up and as result of putting it up on lift, gas escaped and struts collapsed. Does this all make sense? Would all 4 struts fail at once? He gave us estimate of just under $1000 to do the job - does that sound right? Also told us we should do our timing belt and all the other belts (all original) for about another $400. We knew it was time for fan belts, etc; not sure if new timing belt really needed yet.Would like to hear from people in the know. Thanks.

Answer:

Never heard of putting a car on the lift making any of the go bad. As far as the belts, the timing belt should be done around 90,000 - 100,000 miles. I would take the car some where new. This guy seems dishonest.
Sixty thousand miles for strut replacement is possible belts to if original. Its the price that sounds unreasonable to me. Shop around first I will bet you dont have $500.00 in parts.
