Question:

how much does it cost to replace my cars front axle?

I was in an accident yesterday that broke my cars front axle (I drive an ‘06 Pontiac Vibe) and tore off the driver side mirror. It‘s at the shop now, and I know i can wait to find out how much it is going to cost, but I‘m impatient, and a google search didn‘t help me. Is it really expensive?

Answer:

It can be, but impossible to give a good answer unless I can see it. Sorry, but this will be a test of your patience. I would be willing to bet somewhere around a couple of thousand dollars if the axle is really broken, but it may be something like a CV joint, a strut, or a ball joint and people often call it a broken axle when it really is not. That might even cost less than the mirror. I can say that I know your car is front wheel drive and for this reason I would be willing to bet it is something like the CV joint, ball joint kind of thing. Long story short - you have hope. Good luck
CV shafts run around 70.00, depending whether or not you bend the lower or upper control arm, I would guess just for the shaft 200 to 250. But I have not see the car.
