Hi, I have 5 children and I know what it's like to feed a big familyI don't always like making those pre-packages meals thoughI personally like making them soupsand soups are great because all you have to do is add a loaf of bread or a nice salad and you have a good healthy mealYou can make all kinds of soupsBean, noodle, veggie, zucchinni, split pea, and the list could go on and onPlus you could make one big pot on the weekend and freeze it in big family size containers.
No one can tell you how much yarn you will need because of all the variablesThe only person that can make a guess is YOUYou will have to make a gauge swatch - I know, but there is no other way- and measure itMake it a good size, at least 10 cm or more wide and the same tallYou will see the hand of the fabric you get (the way it feels) and know whether you need to use larger or smaller needlesDetermine the area covered by your swatch, and weigh it to determine how much yarn was usedThen determine the area of the blanket you are making (so that math we learned in school DOES have a purpose!) and using ratios, you will know how much yarn you will needThat really is the only way to know for sure Not all yarns weigh the same that are the same length, so the fibre content makes a huge differenceYou will have to do this swatch before you use ANY yarn, since they can vary so muchAs you gain experience, you will have a better idea (keep good notes) of what you will need, but actually making it is the only way you will know for certainty.
