Question:

How often does the computer run a system check on a 1998 Ford Ranger?

I bought a part at Auto zone and want to return it if it‘s not the piece causing the check engine light to come on, but I need to know how many miles I have to drive before the computer will run another check.

Answer:

Trusting the daignosis of anyone from Auto Zone was a bad idea to start with.
The PCM checks the system continually. If you've corrected your problem, it will take 15 engine starts or so to cycle the fault code out of memory. If you have a code scanner (or can borrow one from AutoZone, or can convince them to do it for you), you can clear the fault code memory with it immediately. You can also remove the negative battery cable for a couple of minutes . . . but this clears all PCM memory tuning settings as well (not to mention those pesky radio presets and clock), and you will need to drive a mixed city/highway cycle (10-15 miles) to restore them.
as soon as you start it and while your driving it . it checks it all the time
