Cookies! I can't wait to decorate safety goggles for someone to wear tho.
1) The missile that was launched did not contain nuclear materials. You should be concerned though that future actual launches might. The DPRK doesn't have the resources to waste nuclear materials on a test-launched missile that they may not be able to recover from the middle of the pacific ocean. (The U.S. navy could beat them to the missile if they wanted to). 2) If the military had been so ordered, the U.S. Navy could have shot the missile out of the sky. However, as per SECDEF Gates speech last week, they had no intention to unless they deemed that the missile was targeting U.S. territory. 3) When carrying a normal payload weight, the missile has the capability to reach just the edge of the hawaiian islands, but it can reach Alaska. 4) Nuclear munitions must be detonated by design to create the desired affect. Fission or Fusion reactions are required to cause the atomic reactions, and missile defense shields and interceptors that make kinetic kills will not detonate a nuclear warhead. If it were a dirty bomb however, the situation would be different. 5) In short, with as much notice as North Korea gave and the sophistication of our technology the missile could have been shot down, but the government didn't give such an order, so the military didn't execute it. ** Also, to correct somethign stated above, While Israel is not an official nuclear power, they have not signed the no first use treaty. There official nuclear policy is that they have no policy. They will use them as deemed necessary to their national security. A deterrent that has served them well.
