Question:

how to protect a wooden shelf from fireplace heat?

I've got a wooden shelf above the fireplace and the underside of it gets very hotIs there anything I can do or use to protect it, maybe coat it with something?

Answer:

with my family, homemade anything doesn't last but a day or twobut my grandmother freezes about everything (including pies and cakes)
Try painting the underside of the shelf with aluminum paint or taping aluminum foil to the bottom of the shelf.
individual slices is best so it can be used as wanted, not wastedIf you freeze it whole then whole needs defrost etcso that is harder on good flavorIn my house it is gone n 1 daylol
if it won't be going fast, slice it into individual servings, wrap in plastic or put in sandwich bags, and freezeHeat in microwave before serving hot with ice cream.
I usually cover with foil and put in fridgeIf it starts to get old -do what I do- I break the pie up into smaller pieces, put in bowl, heat and put a scoop of ice cream on top -the kids eat it up!
