Answer:

then kill them imo just kidding
Canned foods last a long time. Things such as canned vegetables, fruits and stews are a good idea. Just make sure you read the expiration date if there is one. Also, consider bottled drinking water for consumption, washing up, and flushing a toilet when there is no water supply (doesn't have to be distilled). MREs are fine short term but you'll get tired of them quickly. You may not have the ability to cook rice or dried beans; that's why canned goods are better. You can eat them directly from the can. Be sure and have paper towels, toilet paper, Kleenex, etc. Have some Tylenol on hand and a basic safety kit with antibacterial creams, band-aids, etc. Flashlight or a battery operated lamp for nighttime is good. Plenty of dry bedding, too. Hope this helps.
Then they need to start caring—you might put yourself in a risky situation.
Firstly make sure your smoke alarms are working, secondly show them pictures of the effects of fires started by carelessness in the kitchen. That should scare them into taking fire safety seriously. You should get a kitchen fire extinguisher and a fire blanket because even the most careful people can end up having to deal with a fire. A few months ago I had a chip pan fire and if it were not for my extinguisher I would likely be paying thousands for repairs and that is the best case scenario. Also, dont worry so much about losing your stuff, possessions can be replaced, lives can not. If there is a fire make sure everyone is out and then do not go back in, I once had to drag my idiot friend out of a burning building (caused by gas leak and explosion) after he went back in to retrieve his iPad. I had to risk my life to save that idiot and damn near got killed by the roof collapsing, not to mention I spend hours in hospital for smoke inhalation afterwards. Fire safety is not a joke and your family should know that. If you want to show them what I have said, It may give them an insight.
