How do I replace the water pump on a 1996 Mercury 200 hp outboard engine? I have the parts, but want to make sure I replace it correctly. Thanks!
Remove the lower unit. Place the lower unit in a stand if available. unbolt the waterpump housing and lift off and over the shaft. Place new water pump lower piece on lower unit. slide the new impeller down the shaft and line up with shaft key and slide into place. place water pump upper housing on shaft and slide down over impeller, turning shaft a bit to bend impeller blades. Bolt down housing, grease shaft splines and put lower unit back on. You may find it easier to change the lower unit oil while you have it off.
good answers. forward gear is a good idea, just make sure the controller is in fwd. also. when you turn the driveshaft to put the housing over the impeller make sure to always turn it clockwise from the top.
I strongly suggest that you purchase the Bible at a local outboard shop, it has exploded views and good directions, as well as tips, even if you don't know a lot about engine's it will educate you about YOUR engine, just thumb through it, the water pump change out directions are very good !
Hey follow Mark T's Instructions, But I always place the lower unit in full forward gear first it makes it easier to line up the drive shaft by giving the prop a tweak and its easier unless you have someone to turn the flywheel for you.
Save yourself a lot of time and trouble and take it to a certified Mecury mechanic.
