I have a 1967 Camaro. The right rear wheel wobbles. I have checked the rims and they‘re not warped. The only thing I can think of is the axle is bent. I need to know the steps to replace the axle. Are there any old Chevy mechanics out there? I need good sound advice.
before you pull the axle out, after you remove the tire and drum, start the car,on the jack stand, and let the axle turn. put something stationary, on the floor, near or next to the axle flange to check and see if it really does wobble. you might save yourself some trouble if its not bent or at least you will know whats wrong. good luck bro.
FIRST U NEED 2 REMOVE THE INSPECTION PLATE FROM THE REAR END(differential) you will find a block in the center which covers the horseshoe keys which holds the axles in place, go to right wheel, and remove wheel and brake drum. There will be a plate which holds the bearing in place. remove the plate, and, axle , bearing, plate will come out w/ slight pull. You will need to have the bearing pressed off, unless u have a bearing press. NOTE: YOU MAY NOT BE ABLE TO SEE A BEND IN THE AXLE BUT IT MAY STILL BE BENT, BUT NOT NOTICEABLE.
Jack the car up and take the wheel and drum off. Pull the differential cover off and rotate the ring gear until you can get the lock bolt out of the cross pin. After you remove the lock bolt rotate the ring gear until you can slide the cross pin out of the differential carrier. After the pin is out have someone push in on the axle so you can remove the lock washer from the end of the axle. Then pull the axle out. done. Hope I have been helpful.
