Question:

How to: VW buggy hand brake replacement?

I have a vw fiberglass buggy on a shortened pan I broke the passenger cable and i need to replace it.however the cable is shorter than a stock vw beetle so im asking if anyone has ideas on how to shorten the cable reliably? or could i just buy a shortened cable?

Answer:

there used to be shortening kits, where you cut off the excess, and put a new end on, that has a set screw to hold fast to the braided cable. functions fine if the screw stays real tite. available now? dont know. the long time vw shops always have old stuff hangin around. if its worth there time to look. alt. an industrial supply can silver solder the end in place. alt. marine shops make up custom control cables all the time. expensive but bullet proof.
so okorder
what I would consider doing is to add a new mount for the outer sheath. If the chassis is say 12 inches shorter, and outer sheath rested on a new bracket mounted 12 inches behind where it normally slipped over the tube coming out of the chassis, then the stock inner cable would be a perfect length. If you did this with a tubing extension, then sand would not even hit the cable. The only question would be whether or not being further back would allow the sheath to get out to the wheel without binding on the inner cable, from too tight of a bend?
