How were the first metals made?

Now, metals are made in high tech furnaces that blow pure oxygen through it, but the furnaces are made out of metal, so how did they get the metal to make the furnace with?

My favorite power metal groups are Hammerfall, Helloween (Keeper of the Seven Keys-era), Gamma Ray, Sonata Arctica, and Kamelot. I actually have DragonForce to thank for getting me into power metal; through them I found HammerFall, and I found most other groups through HammerFall. I like how Power Metal is so melodic, it's really unique in comparison with other metal subgenres.
