Are you sure the old charger wasn't working? Did you measure its output voltage with a volt meter? Is it possible that the battery pack is failing?
Bad power adapter or the power port jack pin is broken lose from the mother board. Has the power cord been pulled or jerked out hard ?
If the battery is 2 years old or more, it is likely dying. That is usually 90% of the issues between battery and charger By the way, the charger should be the SAME voltage, 18.5V if the old one was. Sounds like you got a generic charger. Some laptops don't like generic chargers, and may not charge the battery at all.
