Answer:

The border situation between East and West Germany was absolutely absurd ! Through the center of Berlin was a massive stone wall Berlin Wall. Check the Internet for pictures. Around the city and on the border from the North sea and the Czech border was a double fence line, distance was around 1000 feet, between it grew gras and some areas had mine fields. On both sides was a small street where the border was patrolled by East and West German border troops with jeeps. On the East German side was a second fence line 6 miles inland. Only army personal was allowed inside this area and farmers had to be accompanied by army members if they worked the fields. On both sides around 5 miles distance were listening posts which were able to listen into the communication and the telephones, basically the complete situation was transparent down to the names and adresses of the army units and soldiers. That was intentionally ! Both sides wanted to avoid any accidents or critical situations. There was trade between East and West Germany and the truck drivers on both sides worked for the secret service ! There was an official no fly zone of 10 Miles on each side, in fact the border was controlled by helicopters: they were painted black and did not have any markings on them, the pilots did not wear any uniform and officially did not exist. It was surreal ! After 1961 there was a very limited number of people crossing over the border. West Germany did not in any way support people fleeing over the border. The way was: a certain number of political prisoners or people who wanted to leave East Germany were bought into freedom, the usual price paid to the East German Government was appr. 25,000 $ per person, there were 10,000 to 50,000 deals made per year. It was all hush-hush.
Heyy! wait!! I want that launcher! I'm coming with my home-made rocket!! It has a seating arrangement for one and it's detachable module will blast me into space ( Since I've already given up on being an astronaut *sigh* )
I agree with Sonny and also purchase a good carbon monoxide detector to be safe.
