Question:

I have a Jeep TJ with a Dana 44 rear axle. How are the tube outer end, tapered wheel bearings preloaded?

My axle is a semi-floating type Dana 44 without C-clips. Any help and info appreciated.

Answer:

Shims between the axle flange and the bearing. Not easy to set up, if you are changing and same bearing manufacturejust use same number of shims and check end playshould be OK, but check. Good Luck
the bearing is pressed onto the axle shaft. to remove axle shaft, remove 4 nuts behind backing plate and will require use of a slide hammer to remove shaft. if bearing is to be replaced, will also need new bearing retainer and should get new seal.
