I'm not an expert on paper mache, but I think the weak spot would be the cut edgesSo to save those edges and to reinforce the whole thing I'd suggest using some type of tape, like duct tape to cover the edges and even to make a hingeA more attractive alternative might be to glue some nice fabric along the edges, again to strengthen and protect it Best of luck.
