Answer:

I don't knit but I use yarn with plastic canvasI have found that the Heart brand tends to split more than the Wal-mart brand You may have a tight tension which will cause any yarn to splitKeep practicing with the splitting yarn to see if loosening your tension stops the splitting, if it doesn't, go try another brandALSO, if the yarn is old it will splitMy mother gave me some yarn she picked up at an auction really cheapSome of it was okay, and some splitI used the splitting stuff to work on my crochetI have diminished feeling in my fingertips and knitting and crocheting is difficult because I have a tight tensionPractice and make a note of what brand of yarn it is.
Have a look on E/Bay and see what the same type/size are selling for.
try using plastic or bamboo needlesthey aren't as sharp as the metal onesif you find your tension is too tight, try using the next larger size of needle until you become more accomplished.
I agree with the first answererIt's all about the quality of the yarnAlso, try to not pull the yarn too tightA stitch that is too tight (that you have to fight to get into) will cause the yarn to split too.
Sadly, this is due to the kind of yarn you are usingMany yarns are plied, that is, there are strands wrapped around each otherthat makes them easy to splitthe other reason the yarn splits is that the points of your needles may be a little too sharpyou can try dulling the points a bit by rubbing an emery board across the top of the needlesUnfortunately the only other way you can prevent this is by watching your knitting closely, and ensuring that you get the needle into the stitch rather than into the yarn.
