Question:

I have a small tear in my motorcycle tire. Can it be repaired?

It‘s a Michelin Pilot (I believe) with a few thousand miles on it, but tons of tread left, so I don‘t want to replace it just yet. There‘s a small tear, about 3/4 of an inch, and about tread depth near the center of the tire (Not the sidewall). Can it be filled? There‘s no air leaking, so I was thinking of filling it with superglue to prevent it from getting any worse, but I‘d rather use a specialized product for tires if that‘s possible. Can anyone recommend a product or technique to repair this? Thank you

Answer:

There is NO way that this tire is safe any more. It MUST be replaced, as there is no way to repair the damage that you describe.
You can't repair a tear only a puncture, with either a plug or a patch (some say patch only). A tear can't be fixed, because it will spread. Plugs and patches come with a rubber cement, but it would only delay a blowout not prevent it. Also, 3/4 inch is NOT a small tear. It's enormous. You need to get a new tire. I buy really good tires at $200 a set on the internet. My life is worth more than $200.
Superglue will last about 100 yards, it does not flex. A 3/4 tear is larger than any plug or patch will cope with. Given the importance of tyres to your safety it is best to face the cost.
