Remove the oxygen, such as put a lid or blanket over it. Fire extinguishers use CO2 in them. With dry chemical extinguishers, nitrogen is typically used.
I use X-10 for home automation. I have a couple of these X-10 motion sensors for occupancy detection. These detectors will transmit an X-10 code to a radio receiver plugged into a wall outlet. The receiver then relays the signal via an X-10 power line command across the homes 120 VAC wiring. I have a dedicated X10 receiver which receives the code and runs macros, turning on/off lights as dictated. You can use the wireless receiver to turn on/off a light/lights as a stand alone unit without the need for a dedicated controller.
