Question:

I need help with taking apart a 10 bolt axle with 8.5 gearing on my 96 chevy k1500 4x4 with a eaton locker?

I am currently replacing the axle seals and bearings in the rear axle of my truck. To do this you have to take out the axle shafts. Anyway My dad and I do exactly know what we are doing and now were stuck. We read online that your not supposed to hammer the pinion shaft but we did anyway. We had the pinion shaft out after we hammered it out. But then my Dad thought that it needed to be in to get the clips out that hold the axle shafts in place. So we hammered the pinion shaft back in and now we cant get the Dam thing out. Its stuck something is hitting from keeping it to go back in. Plus we cant rotate the axle to get a better angle to hammer the shaft out now because its sticking out to far. If anyone has any Idea how to help me I would greatly appreciate it. If I need to add anymore details just tell me too and Ill describe it better if I can.

Answer:

What you probably did was mushroom the pinion shaft when you hammered it out, then when you hammered it back in the mushrooming seized it in the bushing. I doubt you hurt any gears. Take it to a professional shop that specializes in differentials.
There is a bolt through the case and the pinion gear shaft. You remove the bolt and the shaft will slide out with finger pressure. Then the axles will push in about 1/4, one at a time, and the C-clips will fall out. Then the axles will slide out. You probably need a professional garage at this point if you have hammered on the shaft and you will need a wrecker to tow the truck to the garage. If all those bearings were needed then your rear end is burned up and you need a new one anyway. Go to a junkyard and buy one and install it.
