Answer:

If you are driving in a car and camping from the car, you may as well bring all the comforts as possible. An air mattress can also be used for water fun. Coming by car negates any concern about weight. However if you are back packing in you need to go with light weight stuff and most air mattresses are not all that light weight. Besides, you have to blow them up which is a chore or use a pump, which is more added weight. And if you get a hole in it, you may as well throw it away. I would just bring in a light weight 1/2 to 3/4 inch foam pad. It does not even have to be full length, four feet is enough for your torso and head. Make sure you have no large rocks under it, consider making a pine needle or leaf bed to put it on and let it go at that.
To go with your tent and air mattress I highly recommend a warm and comfortable sleeping bag. Coleman makes a great bag that meets that purpose as well. It is designed to be easy to pack and easy to carry as well as keep you warm and dry on the wet cold nights outdoors. Plus it comes in a king size so you get lots of room to move. It's the Coleman Colossal 20-degree rectangular sleeping bag (super king). No matter what bag you decide on, have a great time.
I'm with you. The only difference between a squirrel and rat is a hairdo.
