Because it's a Bissell and Bissell is garbage. Yeah, I found that out the hard way, too. You DO need to try a new belt. But don't be surprised if something else breaks once you fix the belt problem. I put up with mine constantly clogging and breaking for 7 or 8 months after I bought it. I finally got so disgusted with it (I spent more time taking it apart and putting it back together than actually USING it!) that I chucked it out with the trash and bought a Hoover Pet Vac Rewind, which I SHOULD have bought in the first place.
