Question:

I there a special kind of cement for stairs?

We had a friend of my husbands put the cement on the stairs and it looks awful. He insists it only needs one more coat of concrete. I think we should have built frames and poured in the concrete. The concrete is chipping on the edges of the stairs. Help please.

Answer:

no special cement is available for stairs as far as i know...
i agree with you,to build a proper set of stairs or stoop, you much form out then pour with redi-mix.good luck
It should have been formed up and poured. I suggest using United Products VinylPatch. It is an acrylic modified cement repair product. It feather edges and can be applied in 2 lifts.
If the stairs are unsupported you need to add more cement to your mixture to increase the strength of the concrete. You can only build unsupported stairs with boxes. The final coat of plaster should round off the edges and improve the appearance of the stairs. If the stairs are supported as in up a slope with earth underneath, boxes/frames would have worked better.
Cement stairs are what I do for a living. It is the only safe way to go. Go to your local Home Depot and ask for Duncan's Elastomeric Stair Cement. It comes in a green can and is very easy to use.
