1) When the follower and the slide stop got into contact, the slide stop will be pushed up due to tension from the magazine spring. When the slide stop was caught inside the notch on the slide, the slide will lock open. 2) And when you put a new magazine in with the slide open and release the slide does that put a new round in the chamber without c0cking it? Yes. When a loaded magazine was inserted while the slide was open, releasing the slide will push one round inside the chamber. The hammer or the striker will remain c0cked until the trigger was pulled. The gun is ready to fire.
I would not call the fire department as an emergency but I would stop by and see if they will take a monoxide meter into the house for you to check if your detector is operating correctly.
