There are numerous energy efficient improvements today. The one you are thinking of is the CF or compact flourescent, which is not as new but has been greatly improved. Also available are LED lights which use even less energy. Many appliances that meet energy efficiency standards have an Energy Star rating to signify this. In the vehicle department my favorite fuel efficient type is the gas-electric hybrid. For the home there is solar panels and wind generators. I hope this helps some!
