Question:

If I use one bat thickness of R12 insulation in the ceiling, what R value will two R12 bats thick be?

It's for an unheated gargae - I used bags of R12 insulation, each contains 18 bats, and I put two bats thick in the walls and ceiling. One bat just seemed too littleTwo bats was slightly bursting out of the studs like a pillow, then my 6 ml poly, then drywall.

You are better off to leave it alone as both bats would have to be compressed and no gain would be noticedHowever, if you can install the ceiling bats loosely with no compression, you should get R24Since most of the heat rises to the ceiling, this is where you want the extra insulationYour walls would be fine with one bat or R12 and then drywall over it yielding approxR16Good luck!
