I don't believe traders are the primary cause of a recession. Recession is defined as two consecutive quarters of negative GDP growth. Basically, recession is a loss of productivity. Traders are the same people who buys and sells everyday. They are playing a zero sum game, and it will definitely not affect the market very much. What really affect the market is the banks that increases or decreases leverage in the financial sector and controlling the money flow in the society (at least for the reason for the current recession). There are many financial instruments engineered a high level of leverage and pushed up the prices. In the short run, businesses believe they can produce more due to a higher demand. This action leads to prosperity and job creation. What happens when banks fail or needs to decrease leverage? The opposite will happen. About those scams, anyone can pull a scam. Think about the professional thieves in Spain, identity thieves or telephone scams. Recession is a natural speed bump or a correction.
